Kep City, a coastal municipality in Cambodia, holds provincial status and sits just a few kilometres from the Vietnamese border. Once known as Cambodia’s most glamorous beach town, Kep enjoyed its golden era before falling into decline, especially during the Khmer Rouge years. Many of its elegant French villas now stand abandoned, yet traces of the town’s former charm still linger in the salt-soaked air.

Along the shoreline, wide promenades and oversized statues create an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and slightly surreal. Overlooking the Gulf of Thailand stands an unfinished royal palace, built for the king but never furnished; it remains empty, offering a glimpse into Kep’s complex past. A smooth, paved road connects the town to Kampot, just 15 km away. While the beaches here are darker than those in Sihanoukville, they are beautifully fringed with mangroves and black rocks. And just a short 30-minute boat ride away lies Koh Thonsay (Rabbit Island), famous for its tranquil beaches and laid-back island life.

Today, Kep is experiencing a true renaissance. New mid-range and luxury guesthouses continue to open, blending modern comforts with the area’s natural beauty. The seafood, especially the famous Kep crab, is fresh, affordable, and irresistibly delicious. Nature lovers can also explore Kep National Park, a lush mountain range covered in deep green jungle and scenic hiking trails.
Founded by the French during the colonial era in 1908, Kep has long been a beloved destination for domestic tourists who come for its peaceful atmosphere, fresh seafood, and sweeping views of the mountains and sea. Boat trips to nearby islands offer breathtaking scenery, while another must-visit attraction is Tuk Chhou Waterfall, located about 10 km from Kampot.
Kep is situated southwest of Phnom Penh and can be reached via National Road No. 3 (through Kampot, 173 km) or National Road No. 2 (through Takeo province).
During the 1960s, under the Sangkum Reastr Niyum government, Kep blossomed into a luxurious seaside retreat for high-ranking officials and the elite. The origin of its name is rooted in local legend: A king named Sa Kor Reach, known for his magical powers, once stole a commander’s white horse and fled to the coast. When the commander pursued him, the king mounted his horse in haste, causing the saddle to fall onto the ground. The place where the saddle fell became known as “Kep Seh,” meaning the saddle, a name that eventually shortened to Kep.
All right, let’s get into the heart of this guide. Kep may be known as Cambodia’s chill coastal town, but it’s full of unique experiences, fresh seafood, and tranquil scenery. Here are the best things to do in Kep during your visit.
If there’s one thing Kep is known for, it’s crab, fresh, juicy, ocean-to-table crab. So naturally, the first stop on your itinerary should be the Kep Crab Market, the town’s most iconic attraction.
Here, local fishermen pull up baskets of live crabs straight from the sea, and the market comes alive with the sound of bargaining, sizzling pans, and excited food lovers. You can haggle your way to a kilo of fresh crabs (they’re caught right off the coast), and for just a few extra dollars, one of the vendors will cook them for you on the spot. And just like that, bam! You’re enjoying one of the freshest crab meals you’ll ever taste.
If crab isn’t your thing or if you want to try a little bit of everything, there’s also fish, squid, shrimp, and other seafood caught the very same morning.

Don’t be intimidated when you walk in. The Kep Crab Market can be loud, bustling, and wonderfully chaotic, with vendors shouting prices, fires crackling under woks, and locals negotiating their catch of the day. Just take a breath, walk in confidently, and join the fun. Bargaining is part of the experience!
Kep Beach may not be the powdery white-sand paradise you’ll find on nearby Koh Rong Samloem, but what it lacks in tropical perfection, it makes up for with authentic charm and local energy.

This beach is the true heartbeat of Kep. It’s where locals come to unwind, families gather for weekend picnics, teenagers splash in the waves, and monks stroll peacefully along the shore in their bright orange robes. If you want a glimpse into everyday Cambodian life, this is the place to experience it.
From morning to sunset, Kep Beach is alive with movement. Children chase each other along the water, couples walk hand in hand, and visitors, locals, and travellers alike spread mats across the sand to share freshly cooked crabs from the nearby market. Others sway lazily in hammocks strung between trees, soaking up the sea breeze.
Despite the constant buzz, the beach has an unmistakably laid-back, soothing vibe. It’s the ideal spot to relax, read a book, dip your feet in the water, or simply sit back and enjoy some wonderfully immersive people-watching.
If you’re looking to slow down and experience Kep at its most genuine, Kep Beach is the perfect place to press pause and enjoy the simple beauty of coastal life.
Watching the sunset in Kep is one of those simple yet unforgettable experiences you absolutely shouldn’t miss. As the sun slowly sinks into the ocean, the sky bursts into shades of orange, pink, and soft gold, creating a breathtaking backdrop over the calm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Here are the two best places to catch a stunning Kep sunset:

• The Crab Market: Relax by the waterfront as local fishing boats drift across the glowing horizon. Order a fresh plate of crab and enjoy the show; it’s the perfect way to end a day in Kep.
• Sunset Rock (Kep National Park): If you’re up for a little adventure, trek through the jungle to reach Sunset Rock, a viewpoint offering sweeping panoramic views of the coastline. The hike can be challenging, but the view at the top is absolutely worth it.
Whether you’re watching from sea level or high above the treetops, make sure to set aside at least one evening to enjoy a Kep sunset. Sometimes the scenery is so beautiful that words simply aren’t enough, so I’ll let Glenn’s photo tell the rest of the story.
Just off the coast of Kep lies Koh Tonsay, affectionately known as Rabbit Island. This tiny island is so small that you can easily walk around it in a few hours, making it a perfect day trip or a quiet overnight escape, since it only has two accommodation options.

Visitors often head to Koh Tonsay to enjoy pristine beaches, calm waters, and a laid-back island vibe that feels worlds away from the mainland. Whether you’re looking to swim, snorkel, or just relax in a hammock under swaying palm trees, Rabbit Island offers a serene getaway.
We had planned a trip to Koh Tonsay ourselves, but time flew by as we were so caught up enjoying Kep. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to visit on that trip, so no photos this time, but the island is definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you want a peaceful escape from the city.
If you love nature and scenic hikes, Kep National Park is a must-visit. Nestled in the interior of Kep Province, this lush park offers a peaceful escape from the bustling town and a chance to enjoy Cambodia’s natural beauty.

One of the highlights is the “Stairway to Heaven” trail, a picturesque path winding through verdant mountains. Along the way, you’ll discover several viewpoints with breathtaking panoramas of the Bokor Mountains and even Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam on clear days.
Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a tranquil stroll in nature, Kep National Park is perfect for soaking in fresh air, stunning landscapes, and a bit of adventure during your stay in Kep.

While it might seem counterintuitive, November to January is actually one of the best times to visit Kep. During these months, the weather is at its most comfortable, cooler, less humid, and relatively dry. Average monthly rainfall drops significantly, making this period ideal for outdoor exploration.
From February to April, temperatures begin to rise, and the days become hotter and drier. While rainfall remains low, the heat can feel intense, and the dusty dry season can make long walks or hikes less pleasant. Then comes the wet season, from May to October. During this stretch, the climate shifts dramatically: expect high humidity, frequent rain showers, and warm temperatures ranging from 26 °C to 34 °C. June through October, in particular, brings heavy monsoon downpours.

But don’t discount the wet season entirely; it has its own advantages. The landscape turns lush and vibrant, making it a great time to explore Kep’s nature reserves. Plus, with fewer tourists around, you can often score the best deals on accommodation.
Planning your trip around Christmas or New Year’s? Smart move. Not only are the weather conditions more pleasant, but December sees some of the lowest rainfall all year in Kep. The skies are generally clearer, and the humidity dips slightly, which means more enjoyable beach days, hikes, and sunset views.

Bottom line: If you want the most comfortable weather, November to January is hands-down the best time to visit Kep. But if you’re okay with a little rain (and want to enjoy greener scenery and better deals), the wet season can be a surprisingly good time too.
Kep is the perfect coastal escape when exploring Cambodia, a spot where relaxation, history, and food all come together. Don’t miss feasting on fresh seafood at the Kep Crab Market, where blue crabs are pulled straight from the sea, cooked to order, and often seasoned with Kampot pepper. After your seafood adventure, take a moment to unwind by the water as the sun dips into the Gulf of Thailand. The sunset along Kep Beach is peaceful, magical, and a beautiful way to reflect on your day. Whether you’re in for the food, the nature, or just a slower pace of life, Kep is a hidden gem that’s well worth a stop on your Cambodia journey.
